What Is a Sinus?

When we say sinus infection, it usually refers to maxillary sinus. The maxillary sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces located on top of the upper teeth behind your cheekbone. Typically, the roots of the upper molars extend up into the maxillary sinuses.

What Is a Sinus Lift Procedure?

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a procedure that makes it easier to place dental implants. Patients who lost their upper back teeth and need dental implants but have significant bone loss for implants, sinus lift increases the amount of bone in the upper jaw. This is relatively common bone grafting procedures for dental implant in the maxilla. Sinus lifts are frequently performed as part of a full mouth reconstruction.

Crestal (Indirect) Sinus Lift

Crestal sinus lift is a surgical procedure which aims to increase the amount of bone in the posterior upper jaw, in the area of premolars and molars, by lifting the lower sinus membrane and placing a bone graft. This technique is a minimally invasive and less traumatic procedure. The implant site is gently prepared and the sinus floor is elevated using traditional osteotome or tool for safe lifting of sinus membrane with hydraulic pressure. The lifted sinus floor is then filled with artificial bone to support dental implants.

Lateral (Direct) Sinus Lift

The most likely candidates for lateral sinus lift surgery are patients who has severe deficiency in the upper jaw. Dr. Jung cuts a small circular window in the upper jaw and pushes it up to access the sinus. The sinus membrane is carefully lifted and additional bone is added into the sinus to have supportive base for implants.

Who Needs A Sinus Augmentation?

Patients who have an inadequate amount of bone in the upper jaw after tooth extraction, the only way of achieving this adequate support is with a sinus lift procedure. To be safe, it is best to make an appointment with us so our dentists can do a proper examination on your sinus.

Immediate implant placement refers to the surgical insertion of the implant into the jawbone immediately after the removal of a natural tooth, all in a single appointment.

The amount of the upper jaw bone should be evaluated in preoperative CBCT scan.

include the thickness of the lateral maxillary sinus wall, the presence of the alveolar antral artery and its diameter, the maxillary sinus floor width and angulation, irregularity of sinus floor, intimate relation of Schneiderian membrane with the roots of the adjacent teeth, sinus septum, and the quality of subantral bone.

Other conditions that occasionally may be observed in special situations are also explained. More than ten parameters should be checked in evaluating CBCT images of paranasal sinuses other than the width and the length of the residual ridge in the posterior region of the maxilla. Each of them may have a significant impact on the results of the open sinus lift surgery.
