1. Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth at the back of the mouth. They usually appear in the late teenage years. They can come in at the wrong angle because there is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to come through. If the teeth can’t completely erupt into the mouth because of crowding or small jaws, they are called ‘impacted wisdom teeth’.
2. Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
When impacted or partially impacted, your wisdom teeth can cause swelling, pain and even infection of the surrounding gum. If tilted or angulated, they can also put pressure on the teeth next to them, which can result in permanent damage to these teeth and their surrounding bone.
Sometimes, a fully erupted wisdom tooth needs to be removed because they have cavities or gum disease. Your toothbrush or dental floss may not be able to reach your wisdom teeth. It would be better to have your wisdom teeth removed if it is hard to clean them thoroughly. Wisdom tooth extraction may be necessary when orthodontic treatment begins, even if the wisdom teeth are in fact healthy and straight.
3. Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Hurt?
After wisdom teeth removal, you can expect to feel some mild discomfort accompanied by bleeding and swelling. Dr. Jung will give you post-operative instructions and prescriptions to ease the pain. It may take a few weeks for your mouth to heal completely. Follow Dr. Jung’s advice for a faster recovery.
